Rakkojae (樂古齋) means to delight in what is old. A night in a 130-year-old tiled house in Bukchon, Seoul, or among the thatched roofs of Hahoe, Andong.
Since creating Korea’s first heritage-house travel programme in 1994, we have done one thing only: restore hanok and put them back to use.
For some thirty years we have worked by taking away rather than adding.
Until the light through the lattice crosses the daecheong floor and reaches the courtyard,
there is nothing at all our guests need to do.
/ Eaves 檐 /
Where the curve ends, the angle of rain and light is decided.
The shade beneath cools the summer and lets the winter sun reach into the room.
/ Lattice 窓 /
A grid of verticals and horizontals, and over it a single layer of hanji.
Filtered light becomes the temperature of the room; the noise outside drops a step.
/ Daecheong 廳 /
Not a place to sit, but a place to stay.
Most of the day passes in the empty space left between the courtyard and the rooms.
All are reserved for house guests
and can be arranged at the front desk at no extra charge.
